Is It Time to Become Civil?

Is it Time to Become Civil? Has our political discourse become toxic enough? How would it be if we still had the Fairness Doctrine? Of course you remember it, don’t you? Wikipedia states, “The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was — in the Commission's view — honest, equitable, and balanced…” This was a USA FCC rule until it was deep sixed during Reagan administration in 1987. “…The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters… “ How would it be if all licensed stations had to present both sides of political issues in an “honest, equitable and balanced” fashion? Would we be as polarized as we are today? One would hope not. Would a Fairness Doctrine be a way to be start civility? Maybe even listening to each other would help. Now there is a unique thought. Just think of it: we could turn on stations like Fox and MSNBC and get both sides of the story. Wow! What a novel idea. Maybe we could then come to our own conclusions rather than just listening to one station and getting one party line. No doubt hearing both sides would help us be better informed and then perhaps make different decisions. What do you think? Could this contribute to a more civil world? Are we too far over the falls to do something like this? Why can’t some of our congressional representatives sponsor a bill to get this done? It would be in their best interest too, wouldn’t it? Well, maybe not, because most of them benefit in some way from a one-sided silo views. So maybe we have to be forceful. Tell um loudly, often and send less money. So, if you think this might be a good idea, write your congresspersons asking them to sponsor such a bill? What do ya say let’s go for it. Damn the adversity we will experience, because hey this is for all our good, right? Is this too much Pollyanna? Maybe. But don’t ya know, we need to help save our flailing democracy!
