David Cariens to Speak at Rappahannock Indivisible Meeting 4/18/18

The April 18th open meeting of Rappahannock Indivisible--We the People will host David Cariens, victims’ rights advocate and author of three books on school shootings, speaking about gun violence in the United States.

Cariens has spent over fifty years working in intelligence and crime analysis. He also teaches courses in Intelligence Analysis and Writing for the Intelligence Community. He has helped develop curriculum for degrees in public safety. He also teaches at the University of Richmond’s Osher Institute and was an adjunct professor at VCU’s Homeland Security Department. He has been personally affected by gun violence; the mother of his oldest grandchild was gunned down at the Appalachian School of Law shooting in 2002.

Cariens is a victims' rights advocate; he takes no money for his work on behalf of school shooting victims and their families. He has authored a number of books, including one on the Virginia Tech shooting, the profits from which go to the families of those killed. His other books include textbooks and crime analysis. His most recent volume is The America We All Want: Protecting Your Community From Gun Violence.

Among the topics Cariens will cover are the lessons he’s learned from his sixteen years as a victims’ rights advocate, the best ways to talk about issues of gun violence, and measures that have been successful in curbing gun violence in the United States. He will discuss the importance of child and school safety. And he will be clear throughout about supporting people’s rights under the Constitution.

Following his presentation, Cariens will take questions from those attending the meeting.

The April 18th meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society of the Rappahannock, 266 James Wharf Road, White Stone. All members of the community are welcome to attend.
