VA Government 101


Rappahannock Indivisible – We the People at its November open meeting on November 15 will present Dr. Matthew Brent, who will cover the basics of Virginia’s state and local governments.


Dr. Brent is in his sixth year as an associate professor of history and political science at Rappahannock Community College, and he is currently serving as interim Academic Dean. He has taught classes in national, state, and local government as well as a range of history courses. He previously taught history at Lancaster High School. His dissertation work at University of the Cumberlands focused on the effects of participation in student government on leadership and academic achievement.

Dr. Brent will discuss the state and local election system, the organization and mission of the major branches of government, and how bills get initiated and passed.

Born and raised in Lancaster County, Dr. Brent graduated from Lancaster public schools. He and his family currently live in Northumberland County.
