Gerrymandering Video Will Be Shown July 19th

How a state’s voters get divided into districts plays a significant role in who gets elected.

On July 19th, Rappahannock Indivisible – We the People will hold an open meeting on the subject of how voting districts are determined and the effect that gerrymandering has on our districts.

Virginia is one of the most gerrymandered states in the US. One Congressional District has already been redrawn because of the Supreme Court ruling it illegal; the Court also ruled that one Delegate district was also illegally drawn. Another eleven districts are still at issue in the lower courts.

The Rappahannock Indivisible meeting will show the documentary "GerryRigged," produced by One Virginia 2021, Virginians for Fair Redistricting.

Charlotte Hollings, who is involved with One Virginia 2021, will introduce the video and provide additional information and discussion. The goal of the organization is to achieve redistricting reform in the Virginia legislature before the next census in 2020 and mandated redistricting in 2021.

Maps of how the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula districts are divided will be on view. Hollings, who owns The Inn at Levelfields with her husband where they run a rowing school, has lived and voted in the Northern Neck for seventeen years.

Rappahannock Indivisible – We the People meets at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship located at 366 James Wharf Road in White Stone. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
